[Free] 1000 Read Alouds Tracker 2024: Homeschool Printable & Challenge

When Ginny Yurich of 1000 Hours Outside shared the statistics that children today spend 4 to 7 hours a day watching television and only 4 to 7 MINUTES a day outdoors, it blew me away and got me to thinking. How much time do kids today spend reading or being read to a day?

21 minutes a day.

21 minutes a day.

Let that sink in. There’s 720 minutes (12 hours) of daytime available for children to fill a day and they only spend 21 minutes of that with a good book and 4 to 7 minutes playing outside; that’s 25-28 minutes total with hours and hours spent on screen time.

Mamas, if we want to beat those statistics with our own children, we’ve really got to be INTENTIONAL with how we spend our time together and what HABITS we cultivate as a family. Those habits will become generational as our children have children and our grandchildren have grandchildren.

Let’s beat those statistics in 2024 with the 1000 Read Alouds Challenge

Will you join me this year in kicking those statistics’ butt?!

Why not challenge your family to complete 1,000 READ ALOUDS this year! I’ve created this fun and FREE 1000 Read Alouds Tracker printable to make it easy peasy. (Printable is at the end of the article as well as 2 other read aloud challenge options)

Here’s how the challenge works…

Anytime you read to your children, whether it be reading them a picture book, a couple chapters from a chapter book, or a passage from the Bible, etc, fill in a bubble on your tracker for each read aloud. This can include those history and science read alouds you have already scheduled into your school day, bedtime reads, reading aloud to your preschooler or even your high schooler…anytime you read aloud to your children, it counts.

As you read each day, those minutes will add up to hours and those passages and chapters will add up to completed books and by the end of 2024, you will be amazed at just how much reading your family has accomplished, while creating a habit of connecting through books.

The point here is to build a culture of reading aloud in your family and to replace time your children normally would spend on screens with time snuggled up together with a good book. Not only does this nurture relationships, but research shows over and over again that reading aloud is such a benefit to children of all ages (not just those who can’t yet read).

Want to specifically keep track of picture books or prefer to start smaller with a 100 picture books challenge? I’ve got you covered with multiple printable options below.

Benefits to Reading Aloud

1. When you read aloud, you are modeling language skills. You pause at commas and periods; your voice inflection changes as you read through; and your children build vocabulary and comprehension skills, and fluency in their own reading.

In fact, a recent study shows that parents who read just one picture book with their children every day provide them with exposure to an estimated 78,000 words each year. Imagine just how many words your kids will be exposed to in 2023 with this 1000 Read Alouds Challenge.

2. Reading aloud to your children helps them to build awareness and empathy through story and experiences that they otherwise may not ever get to experience. They get to travel to far off lands, see how other cultures live, visit time periods from the past and meet real-life characters through the books you read.

3. Connecting with children through reading aloud, builds connection and relationship, providing the child with a feeling of safety and love in their home environment. I know for our family, some of our fondest memories are ones where we were enthralled into a good book together.

There’s no time like today to start reading aloud to your children

Whether you start this 1000 Read Alouds Challenge on the first of January or you start in the middle of July, just getting started is the key. Sit out a stack of picture books or grab an old favorite storybook from your childhood and get started reading aloud with your children today. I promise, you won’t regret it.

And I’d love love love to see your trackers in action! Email me your photos to stephaniercass@gmail.com or tag me @homeschoolvintage.
